Start with MUSX

This page is your step-by-step guide to taking a practical exam with MUSX. Before you begin:

Step 1 — Enrol

Choose your grade at musicexams.com/enrol and pay by card. The instrument is chosen when you submit your recording. There is no account to create — your exam code arrives by email, along with your receipt.

A parent or teacher can enrol on your behalf: they simply pass the exam code on to you.

Step 2 — Open your exam entry

Go to musicexams.com/exam-entry and enter your code. If someone else bought the code for you, entering it files the exam under your own email address — and if that was your teacher, they are linked automatically so they can see your result when it is released.

We then email you a personal link to your exam entry. No password — just keep the email. You can come back through that link as often as you like before you submit.

Step 3 — Record your performance

Make a video recording of your exam performance. Our examiners want to hear you play at your best, so we encourage you to choose the take that you are most happy with.

Your video must fit within the time limit for your grade — refer to the rules for the maximum time allowed.

Most recent phones can record good quality audio and video, but be sure that the lighting makes you clearly visible and that the sound is clear and well balanced if you are playing with accompaniment.

Your instrument should be clearly visible, so experiment with the best positioning of the music stand so that it does not block you in the shot.

Important: your video must be recorded in one take, with no edits to sound or video. Please take a small break between each piece.

Step 4 — Upload your video

Upload your recording to either YouTube or Vimeo (you will need a free account with them — instructions below).

A note on privacy. We recommend setting your video to unlisted on YouTube or private on Vimeo. That way you can share the link in your exam entry without anyone else finding your recordings. Unlisted is free on YouTube; private links carry a charge on Vimeo. We do not suggest uploading your recordings as public videos.

Step 5 — Complete your entry and submit

Open your exam entry from your emailed link, then:

  • Paste in the URL of your YouTube or Vimeo video — copy it from the browser bar or the share button.
  • Enter your repertoire: title, composer (arranger) and publisher for each piece. You must enter at least 3 pieces.
  • Optionally add technical work from your grade level.
  • Agree to the rules, then submit when you are happy with everything.

You can save and come back as often as you like — nothing is final until you submit.

What happens next

  • A specialist on your instrument reviews your submission and writes your detailed, personal report.
  • Our team checks the report, then releases your result.
  • Your result, examiner report and certificate arrive by email.
