What's the difference between theory and practical exams?

Practice papers are taken online and marked instantly — questions on screen, score and marked paper the moment you finish — and a Class Pass gives one code for all your students, whether you teach a class or one to one, unlimited. Practical exams are for performers: you record yourself playing, submit the video, and a specialist on your instrument writes you a detailed personal report. Papers return a marked paper instantly; practical exams return a written examiner report within days.

Is this an ABRSM, AMEB or Trinity grade certificate?

No. The certificate is a verifiable record of a MUSX result — individually numbered and checkable online — not an ABRSM, AMEB or Trinity grade, qualification, or prerequisite pass. If a student needs a board prerequisite (such as ABRSM Grade 5 theory before Practical 6–8), they still sit it with the board.

How are practice papers marked?

Automatically and instantly, against the published standard — the marking is objective, so there is nothing to wait for. You get an exact percentage, the mark for every individual question, and your marks broken down by section the second you submit. (Practical exams are different: a specialist on your instrument reviews your submission and writes you a personal report.)

Why do MUSX candidates get better results?

Not because the marking is easier — because the conditions are better. There's no bell curve: you're graded against clear criteria, never ranked against other candidates. You choose your own date, so you only sit when you're genuinely ready. You're assessed on your best work — recorded in a familiar place without exam-room nerves, submitting the take you're proud of. Students presenting at their best are simply easier to mark well. And pressure? It has its place — exam day will always provide it. Preparation decides how you meet it; rehearsal is how musicians have always built confidence.

For teachers, two learning modes are at work: genuine understanding — the question is understood and the answer retrieved — and reinforcement through repetition. Both are valid pedagogy, and our data shows both working. Students still mastering a topic score ~9% higher on their next attempt, and repeat attempts are more accurate. Improvement across repeated sittings is fluency, not memorisation: every attempt draws freshly randomised questions with shuffled answers. The questions themselves are designed for knowledge acquisition — each multiple-choice option is plausible enough to need thought, and weighing the options, then seeing the marked paper straight away, helps the right answer stick. Students get stronger on the topics they practise — and the marks show it.

Are the exams proctored?

No — no webcams, no screen recording, no software watching you while you work. We design integrity in instead: every attempt draws freshly randomised questions with shuffled answers, and marking happens on our servers. Every attempt also records its timing and answer patterns, so statistical anomalies — impossible speeds, or an exam result that looks nothing like a student's own practice history — stand out in the data. Every certificate is individually numbered and verifiable online, and practical exams carry their own natural assurance: you perform on video, in one take. Sit your exam comfortably, in your own space; the work speaks for itself.

Do I need theory to sit a practical exam?

No — at MUSX, theory is never a gate to performing. (If you are entering ABRSM Practical Grades 6–8, ABRSM still requires their own Grade 5 theory — a MUSX paper does not satisfy that.) But it is a quiet advantage. Theory trains the skills performance depends on: reading fluency becomes faster, more confident sight reading; understanding keys, intervals and rhythm means repertoire is learned sooner, because you recognise patterns instead of decoding note by note; and knowing how the music is built — its harmony, phrasing, structure — is where genuine interpretation comes from. Music learned with understanding is also remembered more securely: structure holds when muscle memory slips. That is the quiet advantage behind a stronger practical result.

Do I need an account?

No. Take a quiz, pop in your email at the end, and your results land in your inbox. That's it.

How do I pay — and what if I don't have a card?

Two ways, both without an account. By card — Visa, Mastercard or American Express through Stripe; your codes arrive by email within seconds and MUSX never sees your card number. By invoice and bank transfer — choose Invoice / bank transfer at checkout and we email you a tax invoice with our bank details, along with your exam codes. Hand those codes to your students straight away: they activate the moment payment clears, and we email you when they do.

Card payments are charged in Australian dollars, so your bank converts on the day. Invoices can be issued in A$, US$, £ or €, paid into a local account in that currency — so no international card is needed. It's how most schools and studios pay, and the reason MUSX works in countries where cards are routinely declined.

Can all my students use it?

Yes — a Class Pass (one week or one month) gives you one code for all your students, whether you teach a class or one to one. Their marked papers appear in your teacher results automatically.
